Hathorn's Bell
The purpose of this project is to explore the historical significance of Hathorn's Bell. This was done by looking at the bell through a historical, evocative, and critical perspective.
Hathorn Hall is the oldest building on Bates College campus. The Bell was donated upon the $500 donation from Jonathan Davis in 1857.
We were particularly intrigued by this topic because it is a visible and audible part of campus yet we felt we did not know much about it. We hear this bell every day as it signals the beginning and ending of classes and walk past it constantly as it is in the center of campus. Upon exploring this vital object on campus we learned through historical, evocative and critical perspectives.

The Bates Seal
The Bates College seal is seen all over campus. It is on notebooks, folders, documents, athletic jerseys, diplomas, sweatshirts, shot glass, golf balls and furniture. However, there is very little information about when the seal is supposed to be used and what the symbols on the seal mean. The lack of such important information drove our research as we continually wanted to know more. This website dives into the history of Bates in an attempt to answer questions that have remained a mystery for many years.
Sampsonville
Sampsonville is a memorial at Bates College named after Charles Sampson. He was an educator that worked closely with individuals located in the Army Barracks, which eventually became known as Sampsonville.
