Regulations of the Board
The new double-sided bulletin board became a new object for Bates College, which came with an article regarding regulations of how to post on it. Notices were posted “twice each day,” once by nine o’clock in the morning and another by one-thirty in the afternoon.[i] The board had regulations regarding how the notices had to look in order to be posted. They had to be typed and printed on standard size typewriting paper. The information on the notice determined which side of the bulletin board the notice would be displayed. The side of the board facing college street would “be used for the Official Calendar formerly appearing in Roger William’s Hall, while the side facing Coram Library will be used for all student notices which have been posted, up to this time, on the two bulletin boards on either side of the entrance to Hathorn Hall.”[ii] The double-sided component of “the mouthpiece” demonstrated the thought that went into its design. The two sides, as explained by the purpose of each, showed how the Mouthpiece made sharing information more efficient.
